M S Gopalakrishnan

From the first time I listened to him on the radio, I became a die-hard fan of him. I would listen to a lot of Lalgudi and T N Krishnan who were great in their own ways, but it was MSG for me. And hearing him in person at Hubli only cast that fact in concrete.

The LP of MSG with TVG with bhavanuta and manamuleda was the first one that we bought at our home when a record player was purchased. And I must have heard that LP hundreds of times over the years and I still have that LP with me !! Over the years, I have attended a number of concerts in Mumbai and Hyderabad – needless to say they were great concerts.

It was Sriguha in Boston once again, from who I got the first full recording of a concert of MSG from his concert tour in the 70’s. It was a concert that he played in Montreal, Canada. The poorikalyani and RTP in shanmukapriya were the highlights of the concert. The cassettes were in my possession for a number of years and then I made the mistake of lending the tapes to someone who promptly lost it 😦

Here is a recording of one other concert during the same tour (Milwaukee, WI) with Tiruchi Sankaran on the mridangam.

Couple of things about this concert:

  • He plays the Mamava meenakshi in subhapantuvarali; when I heard the concert for the first time, I could not figure out the kriti at all. After a few attempts and listening to how the kriti was being played it was clear that it had to be mamava meenakshi, but the question remained on why he was not playing it in varali. It was only 1996 when I was learning from H K Narasimhamoorthy (a student of MSG), I got an explanation. As per Sundaram Iyer (MSG’s father), varali was not being sung or played correctly by anyone (the gandharam per his interpretation) and so decided that in his gharana of sorts the composition will be played in subhapantuvarali !!
  • He plays a marathi natya sangeeth composition wonderfully; i believe it is in misra mand. While in Mumbai I have heard this piece on the radio a number of times sung by Asha Bhonsle – most people are surprised to know that she sang natya sangeeth and very well too. In 1986 I met MSG before the concert at Secunderabad and requested him to play natyasangeeth, but he said he could not because he did not have a table player; my suspicion is that Narmadha who was also playing with him that day was not into natya sangeeth then and he did not want that to be a factor. After all, in the concert above he has mridangam and not tabla.

The nalinakanti composition is a special from the Parur school – in structure it is similar to most other versions, but the complexities in the sangatis specially suited for instrumental rendition is what makes it stand apart. The manner in which the sangatis in the pallavi have been sequenced is simply marvellous – as you listen to the sangatis, you are left salivating for what is to follow. And his execution is flawless. I have always wondered who was behind tuning these sangatis – was his father Sundaram Iyer or MSG himself.

In the swarams section of the ‘nalinakAnti’ piece, you can hear him briefly using harmonics to make the violin sound like a flute briefly. Instead of pressing down on the strings, one lets the finger touch the string to get harmonics. This technique is normally used occasionally and for a few notes at a time.

In another concert, where he plays this piece you can hear him use this technique for an extended period of time – that is phenomenal control on the instrument and precision that few violinists possess.

  1. MSG as an accompanist too was also par excellence. The concerts of BMK and MMI stood out. Of course he was a favourite of the great Chembai. Teaming with Trissur V Ramachandran there are a number of great concerts, A concert with Madurai TNS where there was an RTP in Begada was simply outstanding. MSGs Begada tanam was so brilliant that one didn’t want him to stop at all.

  2. After Lalgudi, MSG was my favorite too. Esp. his Saranga (Neevada negana) and Subhapanthuvarali (Ne pogadakunte) often featured in AIR Hyderabad’s Sangeetha Sudha (a twice a week program for some years)

    Akella Mallikajuna Sarma of Hyderabad was a great fan of his and they both played together in Ravindra Bharathi once in mid 70s.

    I dimly recollect a full Hindustani concert in Ravindra Bharathi by MSG in 70s or 80s.

    The trio of ‘Krishna’s – MBK , MSG and TVG featured in many Sangeetha Sudha replays too.

    My aunt (now a resident of Bengaluru but who spent most of her years in Chennai was a great fan of MSG and his unique bowing technique.

    It would be great that you as a violinist yourself share your thoughts on his bowing technique.

  3. I am a devotee of MSG… quite speechless when I go through the collection.. There is an old Sangeeth Sammelan program where he has played Kannada.. I was looking for that and also the KG Sabha concert with MSA, UKS and Manjunath. If they are available, please post them.

    • I have been a admirer of MSG from the time I heard him as a kid. I continue to listen to his recordings with the same enthusiasm as before and good to know that you are one of my kind.
      I added one more concert with MSA, but I don’t believe that is the one you are looking for.
      I have a few more concerts that I need clean and add – hopefully will do that in the near future.

      • Sir, I just listened to it. It’s the same concert. I got some excerpts long time back from my friend (a famous musician now, Madurai Sundar) which had parts of Nalinakanti and some post tani items (Behag, Subhapantuvarali, Sivaranjani etc). I got the first part at an archive site a few months ago (I am think you probably posted it there) but like the above link, it ends with the tani. I have heard Manavyala by MSG as part of many concerts but the above version stands out. The recording that I got years ago was on a bad quality casette (good ones were not available in 70s in India) so I am really hoping I can get a good quality of rest of the concert.

  4. The MisraMaand composition, which he has played in the clip, accompanied by mridangam is not a Marathi Natyageet. That natyageet, “kharaa to prema” is also in Misra Maand, but tuned differently

    • I am not expert in Marathi Natyageet, but knowing that MSG has played them at various times and that it does sound quite close to it, my thought is that he took liberties with it. I had asked him play Natyasangeet when he was playing at Secunderabad in the 80’s with Narmadha but he did not want to play without tabla !

  6. I posted something about uploading MSG’s collections with me, after seeing a remark by you in the Semmangudi blog. Thank god I didn’t do anything rash! This blog is the ultimate salute to MSG! Many, many thanks for the recordings. I am totally humbled.
    As mentioned by Manavedan above, MSG was outstanding as an accompanist too. I think some of Kalyanaraman and Sankaranarayanan’s concerts were embellished by MSG beyond compare. One shanmugapriya RTP with Kalyanaraman and a Brindavana Saranga RTP with TVS are forever etched in my mind.

  8. Just coming back here to say hi to my friend Shankar Krish from long time. Great to see this website and collection. For others reading here, me and Shankar Krish met on the internet talking about Sri MSG, then Shankar came to meet me in person at Hyderabad where we exchanged some collections, then I met him again in Pittsburgh. I will meet him again for sure. Great to reconnect, although I never disconnected 🙂
