Balamuralikrishna is an artist that people either love or cannot tolerate !!
An interesting comment by a good friend of mine when he was growing up “My brother asked me to start listening to MBK which i did and then a few years later the very same brother asked him to stop listening to MBK for a variety of reasons”. !!!
His concerts from the 60s and 70s were without a doubt fantastic; from the 80s he got into a mode of singing all-self composition concerts and with most of the leading accompaniments no longer playing for him, his concerts did become sort of one dimensioned and perhaps caused a lot of people to stop listening.
One TV concert that remains etched in my mind is when he sang with Bhimsen Joshi – a jugalbandi. He was absolutely stunning.
The magazine Sruti had an article about the accompaniments for him. There was a period when Lalgudi Jayaraman and U K Sivaraman were the ones to accompany him. Later it was M S Gopalakrishnan and T V Gopalakrishnan – which apparently lasted for a very long time in the 60s. So let me start off with recordings of this trio and then follow up with others.

The recording quality is not that good, but the music is very good. The ‘sundari nee divyaroopamunu’ in kalyani is an absolute gem. The sruti bedam both by Balamurali and Lalgudi are mind boggling.
A Must hear concert without a doubt for the Balamurali doubters 😉

I am surprised to see your comment that it was Lalgudi & Sivaraman used to accompany MBK earlier and then later MSG/TVG for many years and so on. It is simply not true. Early days it was Lalgudi with TVG. Please see HMV recordings. He played for about 6 to 7 concerts and then MSG took over and the rest is history. BMK-MSG-TVG combination was legendary in that they became one on stage. Sivaraman came later on and off. How MBK came to Chennai, then Madras, has a story in itself . His first major concert was at Brahma Gana Sabha (Narada Gana Sabha was an off shoot later on)). Let us not distort the truth.TVG had a great role in MBK ‘s coming to Madras and both he and MBK were like inseparable twins in the early sixties until the late sixties. Well there are many stories that are not known in the public domain. Let us stick to music here.
with M S Gopalakrishnan, U K Sivaraman, G HArishankar & V Nagarajan – 1997 (Tiruchi?)
This is from Maruthi Baktha Samajam, Nanganallur (I have the full video of this concert)
Thanks. Updating the info…
I agree with you every word on what you have to say on MBK – a genius and an eccentric at once. With TR Mahalingam, he was like the Pakistan cricket team – completely unpredictable – brilliant and out of the world in one concert and completely ordinary at another concert. We used to have a superstitious thing: if we had attended one of paid concerts it would bomb but if it was a free kutcheri it would turn out to blissful! The one constant in all this was his unique voice – splendid and mellifluous. I and my elder sister used to wait eagerly for his Nagumomu (Abheri) on AIR Hyderabad’s ‘Sangeetha Sudha program.
Thanks for putting all the various links at one place. I love BMK’s music. I was fortunate enough to meet with him a couple of times off stage as well, through a common friend. He had a great sense of humor. He was a genius in music. What an effortless singer he was !!.
Sir, the first link actually has Ramanathapuram CS Murugabhoopathy on mridangam not TV Gopalakrishnan. Vivaldri Iyer (MLV’s long time ghatam accompaniment) is playing here too.
It is 1964 concert at the Music Academy according to KS Kalidas, disciple of Pazhani Subramanya Pillai at the CSM Centenary celebrations in 2014.
I have the full concert here which you can use:
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/ccg9mwz6bj7s7/BMK_MSG_CSM_VI_MUSICACADEMY1964
The second link has UKS on mridangam not TVG. Please correct.
The link labeled as M Chandrasekaran and Tanjore Upendran took place at Parvathi in 1971 and the mridangam and ghatam vidwans are UKS and THV.
Thanks so much for sharing these priceless recordings especially the ones that we have not heard before like Chetulara.

Thank you.
Thanks for the corrections. I will update the page contents in a few days.
Very nice concerts. The second last concert, the 1958 video, the first 11:57 is from another concert, and has been spliced to the main concert. I have the full tape of this concert, and the concert from which the first 11:57 has been taken is another concert also uploaded by a rasika.
Thanks for the info. The youtube includes are from other sources.
If you have the full concert please share so that I can add to this page.
And thanks for the Revati RTP. This particular version I am hearing for the first time. Brilliant…! Words fail me…
Balamurali’s Music Academy concert of December 23, 1978: This is the year he was conferred the title of Sangeetha Kalanidhi.
You must be kidding in suggesting that his later year concerts weren’t as good as the 60s. No musician who has been on the stage before or after him can hold a candle infront of this genius. It is 1-10 BMK and then the rest.
You will agree that we have differing opinions and views and just as you are emphatic about your view, I can express my views in my blog.
Perhaps you are missing the point that my comment was a comparative one !!
Hello Shankar, I just happened to stumble upon your blog, and I am blown away! Thank you for compiling all these concerts on one page. Brings back fond memories of our time in Pittsburgh.
Hello Krishna,
Good to hear from you. Glad that you could connect after all these years. There are many concerts on my blog which we attended as I remember in the 90’s.
