He is another great musician, who did not get recognized in his hey days, but now has a great following. And not surprisingly, I did not have much exposure to his music till the late 80’s and when I did it was an eye opener. It is unfortunate that I did not get an opportunity to listen to him in person.
Though a prime disciple of GNB, her carved out his own style while retaining a lot of the GNB bani. His inclusion of vivadi ragams in all his concerts and of the vivadi ragams, his handling of the hindustani based ragams and his overall approach to music makes him quite unique. Add to this his thillanas, tuning of bhajans in hindustani ragams and transforming the so called tukkadas into something else – these keep ringing in one’s ears for a long long time.
According to H K Narasimhamuthy (violin), he used to listen to and participate in long practice sessions at Kalyanaraman’s house in the 70’s when he was living in Chennai. These sessions would last 5 to 6 hours and HKN says that he learnt a lot from these sessions. I am sure it would have been a great experience to have been fly on the wall during these sessions.

Unfortunately the cut you are referring to is the recording that I received. Hopefully someone else has the recording with this cut.
Dear Shankar Ji, of the first 2 concerts (duration 2:53:42 & 1:58:29), the 2nd seems to be a repeat of the first. Also first song “Mahaganapathim’s ” raga is indicated as ‘Gowla’, while it’s ‘Nata’. Must be a slip. 2nd concert said to be starting with “Karuna Samudra-Devagandhari” (4+Various) is missing; will be thankful if it could be uploaded.
This is not to distract from the merit of the blog which is really superb and I, along with others, hugely thank you for the tremendous good work. Take care and God bless you.
